Conversations between young people and adults can be challenging, especially when it comes to talking about safety.
As someone working with young people, in whatever capacity – you play a vital role in empowering them. Building their confidence and emotional resilience. Ensuring they feel heard and respected. Helping them make the right decisions for themselves.
With your support and a safe environment, young people show us that they are capable of making the right choices to keep themselves out of harm’s way. As a trusted adult, you can be there for them when they need someone to turn to, or to share a concern.
If you’re trying to help young people make the best choices they can, then we’re here to help you start the best conversations that you can.
Stay True to You supports positive conversations about safety with the young people that look up to you.
It’s an evidence-led approach based on what youth practitioners and young people have told us works. It aims to make sure young people know there are trusted adults, and other sources of advice and help, available if they need them. Our resources are free and available for anyone working with young people.
It’s about championing young people. Lifting them up. Helping them see that they can trust their own abilities and are able to make their own positive choices – helping them stay true to themselves.
You can help young people stay safe. Here's how the TRUE approach can help:
TALK
Create open and honest dialogue with young people. Help them build respectful relationships where they are treated as equals.
RECOGNISE THE REALITY
Acknowledge what’s happening and recognise their feelings and fears, without adding more. Offer up the facts and share information about consequences, in all their forms.
UNDERSTAND
Demonstrate you’re trying to understand by truly listening to their experiences. Give them space to talk freely with no judgement or instruction.
EMPOWER
Help young people understand their own capabilities. Help them recognise the things they can positively do for themselves, and help them consider who they trust to ask for help.
Stay True to You is here to help you have better conversations.
Below you’ll find free practical materials, intended for anyone engaging with young people, to help start meaningful conversations about safety.
Please contact us to order free, hard-copy printed materials of any of the below resources.
Free training is also available to support use of the Stay True to You approach.
